Too many toys, not enough time, and a gift nobody was sure about. Sound familiar?
Over a school year, party after party means shop trips and last-minute orders. Around 28 million toys are thrown away in the UK every year, and a child can end up with more presents than they can open in one sitting. Six in ten parents I asked agreed there are too many gifts at children's birthday parties.
Many parents would welcome one shared gift - but nobody wants to be the first to break the norm.
I'm a parent too. At a family birthday party in 2018, I asked guests to give one gift together instead of bringing presents. It worked, but it took courage. Picture My Gift is here to make that first step easier - simple, low-pressure, and done in minutes.
It is designed for parents who organise a party through a group chat (WhatsApp, Signal or similar): you create the invitation here, share it in the chat, and guests RSVP with one tap.
It grew out of my master's research at the London Interdisciplinary School.
How it works
1
Create a group chat for the party. WhatsApp, Signal or similar: add the parents of the children you are inviting, as you normally would.
2
Create your party page on Picture My Gift. Add your child's name, the date, and their birthday wish.
3
Send the invite. A short message with a link, shared in your party group chat. Guests RSVP on the page and see the gift option once they've confirmed.
4
See who is coming. You get a private host link that lists the replies. Keep it safe - it is the only way to see them.
5
Guests choose freely. They can participate in the group gift or simply come and celebrate. Both options are always equally visible.
6
Contributions are anonymous to the group. Other guests never see who gave or how much. š In this trial, payments go straight to your own payment link, so you, as the host, can see who paid in your own account. Anonymity from the host is planned for the full product.
7
As the host, you choose how the gift is organised.
Via the platform - the simplest option. Guests see the group gift directly after RSVPing. No extra steps for you.
Via a friend - ask someone you trust to send the gift message to the group on your behalf. They become your gift champion and handle the coordination personally.
8
All messages are pre-written for convenience - but they're yours to edit before sending. Feel free to personalise them to your own tone and style.
A group gift can also be...
š± A friendship garden Each guest brings a small plant or seed packet. Together, everyone plants a friendship garden - a living reminder of the people who came to celebrate.
š A book swap Guests bring a favourite book and take one home from the birthday child's collection. Stories shared, stories discovered.
š§ Toy repair workshop Guests bring a broken toy. A repair expert helps children fix and upcycle them - creativity, sustainability, and a lot of fun.
Privacy
Your privacy. This is a trial, so we keep very little. We save only what the invitation needs: the child's first name and age, the party details, the gift wish and the host's payment link, plus guests' replies (a first name, yes or no, and how many children).
Anyone with the invitation link can see the party details, so share it only with the parents you would invite anyway. Only the host can see the replies, using a private host link.
We never save surnames, photos, phone numbers, email addresses or card details. Payments go straight to the host's own payment link.
Everything is deleted automatically 4 weeks after the party, or sooner if the host presses Delete on the host page. Questions, or want something removed? Write to hello@picturemygift.com.
FAQ
š Note for test users: this is a trial. Items marked "Planned" are not live yet. Thank you for testing!
Does the money go through Picture My Gift?
No. Guests pay the host directly through the host's own payment link (PayPal, Revolut, Monzo or similar). Picture My Gift never handles money.
Will guests know what others contributed?
No. Other guests cannot see who gave or how much. In this trial the host can see payments arriving in their own account. Planned: anonymity from the host too, and secure payment holding.
How do I set a contribution amount?
When you set up the gift, you choose a suggested maximum per person. It is only a guide: guests can give less, a little more, or nothing at all.
What if a guest prefers to just come and celebrate?
That is fine. Guests can join the group gift or simply enjoy the party.
How do I see who is coming?
After you create the invitation, you get a private host link. Open it at any time to see who has replied and how many children are coming.
What if I lose my host link?
Replies cannot be recovered without it, so save it somewhere safe. The invitation itself keeps working for your guests.
Can I add a photo?
You can add a picture for your own preview, but it stays on your device and guests will not see it. Planned: sharing photos of the gift with guests.
What if more money is raised than needed?
Planned. In this trial, payments go straight to the host, who decides what to do with any surplus.
